City of North Port's 50th Anniversary

50th Anniversary Grand Musical Finale
December brings to a close the last of the events presented by the North Port 50th Anniversary Committee in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the City of North Port. This year long celebration has included a parade, a concert, citywide games, a City Hall Open House and a Gala.

On Sunday, December 13, 2009 the 50th Anniversary Committee will hold their last event honoring the City’s 50 year history. Plan to take an afternoon off during this busy Holiday Season to attend this event.

February 28, 2009 - 50th Anniversary Parade & Festival
This kick off celebration event was one of the most exciting days of festivities in North Port history. The City of North Port's 50th Anniversary Parade included more than 130 participants and drew in thousands of people from across the region. The parade route traveled along Sumter Boulevard from Appomattox Drive to City Hall and featured floats, bands, dignitaries, classic cars and the Budweiser Clydesdales. Immediately following the parade, thousands of people gathered on the grounds in front of City Hall and the George Mullen Activity Center for a grand celebration to commemorate the City's 50th Anniversary. The festival included a sock hop, dancing, kids activities, multiple music performers, vendors and more. Click here to view photo's from the kickoff celebration event.

March 21, 2009 - 50th Anniversary Under the Stars
The 50th Anniversary Committee hosted an special concert at North Port High School featuring the Jerry White Band and the NPHS Jazz Band. The evening began with a hospitality reception in the courtyard and a performance by Heron Creek Middle School's jazz band.

April 4, 2009 North Port Games
Hundreds of people spent the day at Dallas White Park and participated in a host of games, including softball, volleyball, egg races, jump rope competition, dance, swim competitions, hula hoop contest, Ping Pong matches and more. Games participants and spectators also enjoyed lots of other features, free attractions and entertainment including Boxing Exhibition, Fitness classes , martial arts demonstrations, Bounce houses, free Face Painting and music performances by BUZ and Mary Ann.

June 18, 2009 50th Anniversary Reception
More than 500 people attended the City of North Port's 50th Anniversary Celebration at City Hall. The event commemorated the actual day of the City’s incorporation and began with a welcome and ribbon cutting ceremony. Immediately following, attendees toured City Hall viewing items from the City archives including photos, geographical snapshots and newspaper clippings all reflecting a half-century of North Port’s amazing history. The celebration also included entertainment, food supplied by various local businesses, a cake cutting, photos of couples celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversaries. A time capsule was also buried in the City Hall complex off Sumter Boulevard.

June 20, 2009 - 50th Anniversary Gala
The City of North Port's 50th Anniversary Committee hosted a gala on Saturday, June 20, 2009 in honor of the City's 50th Anniversary. The gala, which sold out at 175 seats, was held at Heron Creek Golf & Country Club. This was an exquisite evening of diner, dancing, and reminiscing. During the cocktail hour guests were entertained by pianist Rosalee Stilwell. After a fabulous dinner, the Double Effects band played a variety of dance music from the 1950's to present with a mix of fast and slow songs. The Master of Ceremonies for the evening was be Bob Harrigan, weatherman for ABC Channel 7.
