Weekly Highlights: March 17, 2017

Each week, the City departments report some of their achievements and tasks. Here are the highlights from this week. For more information, contact the City Manager's Office at (941) 429-7077.

CITY MANAGER’S OFFICE

  • Staff has been involved in the development of the HealthCare Career Fair with CareerSource Suncoast that will be held on Wednesday, April 5th from 9 am till 1 pm at the Morgan Family Community Center.  The Fair is designed to help approximately 15 local healthcare employers to find their best possible employee from North Port for their jobs.
  • Staff met with a business owner about its potential expansion to the City of North Port which would include warehouse, distribution and office headquarters.
  • Other business recruitment activities this week: Project Innovation, and a new prospect that plans on bringing a brew pub to the city.
  • Staff met with the developer of 2 commercial spots in the City, continuing to assist in the attraction of retail and recreation amenities.
  • As part of its Outreach Efforts, staff attended the North Port Area Chamber of Commerce Networking Lunch at Beef O’Brady’s and met with the new members of the Chamber through the Chamber’s membership drive.
  • “How North Port Grows” with Ruth and Randy airs every Thursday at 5 pm on WKDW 97.5 FM, North Port’s community radio station.  Ruth and Randy taped two shows with guests from Goodwill and from Leadership North Port.
  • Staff is assisting the Goodwill Opportunity Center to market its Micro Enterprise Program that teaches residents how to create their own business.  The series of classes begins on Monday, April 3rd and will meet twice each week on Monday and Thursday evenings for six weeks.  Call (239) 995-2106, ext. 2219 to sign up for the Program.
  • Staff met with a group of businesses, government officials, and banking representatives to discuss a proposal for increasing workforce housing in Port Charlotte and North Port.
  • Staff continues its efforts to assist a local business as it proceeds through the permitting process.  The business is building a new office building that will house its veterinary office.

FINANCE

  • Accounts Payable paid 187 invoices and 92 vendors totaling $2,213,935.85 for goods and services provided to the City. 
  • Staff received 10 new travel requests and audited 8 that were complete.
  • The City received $758,369.53 in revenues from utility payments, Warm Mineral Springs, and other miscellaneous sources.
  • Staff processed 11 purchase orders, 13 visa requests, and 5 sole sources.
  • Staff prepared daily bank deposits and cash reconciliations.
  • Staff continued to work on the FY 2016 CAFR.
  • Staff processed payroll changes.
  • Staff attended the APA webinar and FGFOA trainings.

FIRE RESCUE

  • North Port Fire Rescue responded to 155 incidents. These responses included 10 outside fires and one residential fire, 106 EMS calls, four hazardous conditions, 12 service calls, 18 good intent calls, and four false alarms.
  • Fire Rescue Administrative staff approved 15 P-card transactions and processed 10 invoices totaling $18,908.09 for goods and services.
  • North Port residents called in eight smoke detector service requests. Fire Rescue personnel checked 44 detectors and replaced 44 batteries.
  • Fire Rescue Administrative staff purchased $3,173.93 in EMS supplies and pharmaceuticals.
  • Fire Rescue staff finalized and submitted the FY2018 Capital Improvements Plan presentation to the Budget Office.
  • Fire Rescue staff had bunker gear repairs completed.
  • Fire Rescue staff completed the Globe NFPA 1851 Advanced Cleaning and Inspection training.
  • Fire Rescue Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) instructors taught ACLS course renewals to department paramedics. This training will continue over the next couple of weeks at Station 81.
  • Fire Rescue Emergency Medical Services Chief attended two Charlotte County Technical College advisory meetings for discussions about their new paramedic program.
  • Fire Prevention staff met with the building department and the owners of the Henderson Plaza to discuss the business use groups allowed in their building and the correct procedure for new businesses to obtain their certificate of occupancies.
  • Fire Prevention staff conducted a fire and life safety talk and fire extinguisher class for the staff of the North Port Senior Center.
  • Fire Prevention staff conducted a certificate of completion and a certificate of occupancy inspection for a business on Corporate Way.
  • Fire Prevention staff conducted a special event inspection of the Farmers Market on the green in front of City Hall.
  • Fire Prevention staff conducted a special event inspection at the Arts On The Green event in front of City Hall.
  • Fire Prevention staff attended a site visit walk through with the building department in reference to a new construction project at a manufacturing company on Toledo Blade.
  • Fire Prevention staff conducted a fire and life safety class to the staff members of The Springs at South Biscayne adult living facility.
  • Fire Prevention staff conducted a special event inspection of a commercial tent for a car show in front of Walmart.
  • Fire Prevention staff reviewed plans for commercial construction and remodel projects, special events, sprinkler, fire alarm, and planning/zoning projects.

GENERAL SERVICES

  • Marketing & Communications coordinated a concerted effort to gather customer service surveys at Warm Mineral Springs. The Department worked with City volunteers and gathered a total of 28 surveys from customers to gage their opinions of the facility and the service.
  • Marketing & Communications continues to work on the website and making improvements to its core functionality.
  • Marketing & Communications worked with Parks and Recreation for several social media campaigns, including coverage of the Arts on the Green event on Saturday, March 11 and the #SpringBreakSpotlight campaign to capture and provide ideas to North Port residents about things to do for Spring Break.
  • Marketing & Communications provided brochures to Visit Sarasota County to include in their outreach efforts to newcomer and inquiring visitors.
  • Marketing & Communications is working with iHeart Radio on a campaign to advertise in both FY2017 and FY2018.
  • Marketing & Communications is working on its FY2018 budget proposal.
  • Marketing & Communications and Visit Sarasota County toured North Port’s parks and visitor destinations to gather content for outreach and marketing projects.
  • Parks & Recreation staff processed twenty-four (24) Achieve Anything memberships consisting of fourteen (14) Annual memberships, six (6) one-month Memberships, two (2) Three-month membership, one (1) DFY memberships, and one (1) Student membership.
  • There were a total of 1,221 membership and daily/drop-in visits to the Morgan and Mullen Community Centers.
  • There were one hundred fifty-seven (157) visits to the Skate Park.
  • There were nineteen (19) facility rentals for a total of seventy-nine (79) hours.
  • There was one (1) open space rental for a total of eight (8) hours.
  • There were two (2) pavilion rentals for a total of five (5) hours.
  • Parks & Recreation facilitated twenty-four (24) hours of community service at the Community Center facilities.
  • To date, the water bottle filling stations located at the Community Centers have reduced the number of plastic bottles potentially discarded as landfill waste in an amount equivalent to 59,855 water bottles.
  • Weekly programming included Beginner Archery, Table Tennis, Pickleball, Tot Time, Martial Arts, Line Dance, Ballroom Dance & Social, Jazzercise, Zumba, Zumba Step, Pound, Volleyball, Soccer, Drama Kids, and Yogarobics. Recreation Attendants provided instruction for Adventure Time, Beginner’s Photography, Intermediate Photography, Skateboarding Clinic, Senior Fitness, Writer’s Workshop, Lunch Time Crunch, Binglo and TRX Suspension Training.
  • GMAC Summer Camp registration continues with forty-three (43) participants registered to date for various weeks of camp.
  • Parks & Recreation conducted a “Rec on Wheels” at Highland Ridge Park on 3/15 with 9 participants.
  • Parks & Recreation will host a  “Pickleball Mixed Doubles Tournament” on 3/18 at Highland Ridge Park.
  • Parks & Recreation and Sarasota County will conduct a “T-Rec Fun Day” Monday, 3/20 at McKibben Park from 10am-1pm.Parks & Recreation is offering the Community Health & Wellness Fair at the George Mullen Activity Center on 3/25 from 10am-1pm. The public is invited to attend this free event designed to showcase health and wellness providers in the community and gather valuable information in support of personal health, wellness and safety.  
  • Parks & Recreation is accepting registration for the “5K Run Club” that begins on 3/27 at the Morgan Family Community Center from 6pm - 7pm; and the “Firecracker 5K” being held on July 4th is accepting online registration at www.runsignup.com.
  • Social Service Division met with YMCA Schoolhouse Lind and JFCS to discuss assistance for clients.
  • Social Service Division received 2 referrals for rental assistance.
  • Social Service Division referred 3 clients to external Agencies for Financial Assistance.
  • Social Service Division completed 3 Lheap screenings
  • Social Service Division completed 6 Lheap applications.
  • Social Service Division completed 11 Financial Screenings.
  • Social Service Division completed 10 Information Requests.
  • Social Service Division hosted the monthly Interagency Meeting with 16 agencies in attendance.
  • Social Service Division expended the EFS grand allocation in its entirety, meeting the March, 2017 deadline.
  • Social Service Division met with Sarasota County Government for available funding sources.
  • Social Service Division continues to finalize details for baby Shower and Expo.
  • Social Service Division received 2 referrals for FPL assistance from Salvation Army – Sarasota.

POLICE

  • Executive Staff met for policy review
  • Staff hosting the FDLE 64 hour, “Instructor Techniques Course”, sponsored by the Suncoast Technical College, Criminal Justice Academy.  Members from the Fla Dept of Corrections, the Sarasota Co. S.O. and the NPPD are attending
  • Staff conducting the Citizen Public Safety Academy – 25 citizens in attendance, on Thursday evenings from 6 to 10pm, for 13 weeks to include graduation   
  • Staff met with Woodhaven Estates Home Owners Association and residents  
  • Staff met with Chaplain
  • Staff conducting orientation with new civilian hire – Background Investigator
